2026 Canada Student Grants: Claim Up to $4,200 in Non-Repayable College Funding

One of the biggest mistakes Canadian students make when applying for financial aid is assuming all government funding has to be paid back. The Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students (CSG-FT) is essentially "free money" designed to help low- and middle-income families afford post-secondary education.
For the 2026/2027 academic year, the Government of Canada has updated the family income thresholds, allowing more students to qualify. Depending on your family size and your previous year's gross annual income, you could receive up to $4,200 per year that you never have to repay.
1. Who is Eligible for the 2026 Canada Student Grant?
You do not need to apply for the Canada Student Grant separately. When you apply for student aid through your province or territory (such as OSAP in Ontario or StudentAid BC), you will automatically be assessed for this federal grant. However, you must meet the following criteria:
- Financial Need: Your gross family income from the previous tax year must fall below the government's phase-out threshold.
- Study Status: You must be enrolled as a full-time student in a qualified program at a designated post-secondary institution.
- Program Length: Your degree, diploma, or certificate program must be at least 12 weeks long.

2. Income Thresholds for 2026 (How It Works)
The Canada Student Grant operates on a sliding scale. If your family income is below the "Maximum Grant Threshold," you receive the full grant amount. If your income is above that threshold but below the "Cut-off Threshold," the grant amount is gradually reduced. Once your income hits the cut-off, you no longer qualify for the non-repayable grant (though you may still qualify for student loans).
Effective August 1, 2026 Thresholds:
- Family Size of 1: Max Grant up to $38,474 | Cut-off at $69,987
- Family Size of 2: Max Grant up to $54,412 | Cut-off at $98,017
- Family Size of 3: Max Grant up to $66,639 | Cut-off at $117,622
- Family Size of 4+: Max Grant up to $75,851 | Cut-off at $130,551
3. Additional Provincial Grants
Keep in mind that the Canada Student Grant is funded by the federal government. Many provinces offer their own matching grants or tuition subsidies. For example, applying for OSAP in Ontario will automatically assess you for both the federal grant calculated above AND any provincial grants you are entitled to, potentially doubling your free tuition money.
