MGNREGA is Ending: What the New VB-GRAMG Act Means for Your Household in 2026
Rumors have been spreading rapidly across villages in India: "MGNREGA is shutting down! Our job cards are useless!" If you have heard this, do not panic. The truth, revealed in the Union Budget 2026-27, is actually a massive upgrade for rural livelihoods.
It is true that MGNREGA is being officially replaced. Starting July 1, 2026, the new Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin (VB-GRAMG) Act takes over. With a staggering ₹95,692 Crore allocated to this new scheme, the government is not stopping rural work; they are expanding it. The biggest highlight? The guarantee has jumped from 100 days to 125 days of wage employment. Let’s break down the rules, answer the question about your old Job Card, and use our live calculator to see how much extra money your family can earn this year.
1. The 125-Day Rule: Household vs. Individual
The most common misunderstanding is how the days are counted. The new law guarantees 125 days of work per Financial Year to every eligible rural household, not per individual. If a husband and wife both demand work, they share the 125 days (for example, the husband works 75 days, and the wife works 50 days).

2. Your Old Job Card is Safe (For Now)
You do not need to panic about losing your current job card. The government has officially clarified that existing active MGNREGA Job Cards will continue to remain valid. You can use your old card to demand work in uninterrupted manner until the new Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Cards are physically issued by your Panchayat.
If your household does not currently have a card, any adult member can simply submit the names, ages, and address details to the Gram Panchayat to register for the new VB-GRAMG card.
⚠️ The 60:40 Funding Warning: The biggest hidden change in VB-GRAMG is how the money is paid. Under MGNREGA, the Centre paid 100% of unskilled wages. Now, the scheme is shared 60:40 between the Centre and the State. This means if your state government is short on funds, there could be delays in wage payments. It is crucial to demand work early in the financial year before state budgets dry up!
The transition from MGNREGA to VB-GRAMG is a monumental shift for rural India. Don't let rumors mislead you. Your right to work has expanded. Go to your Panchayat, secure your 125 days, and use the calculator above to plan your family's finances for 2026. Have you registered for your new card yet? Tell us in the comments below!
