SkillsFuture Mid-Career Training Allowance (MCTA) 2026: The Complete Guide
If you have been putting off upskilling because you cannot afford to stop working, the government has officially removed that barrier. Under the SkillsFuture Level-Up Programme, the Mid-Career Training Allowance (MCTA) has been expanded to ensure older Singaporeans have the financial support needed to future-proof their careers.
Starting from 1 March 2026, the most significant change takes effect: the MCTA now covers part-time training. This means you can keep earning at your day job while receiving a monthly allowance to help cover incidental costs during your studies. Here is everything you need to know about the 2026 updates, who qualifies, and how much you will receive.
1. What is the MCTA and Who Qualifies?
The SkillsFuture Mid-Career Training Allowance is a financial support scheme designed to replace a portion of your income while you undergo substantive, industry-relevant training. It is targeted exclusively at mid-career individuals.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Citizenship: You must be a Singapore Citizen. (Permanent Residents are not eligible for this specific allowance).
- Age: You must be aged 40 and above in the year the course commences.
- Course Type: You must be enrolled in selected full-time or part-time training programmes approved by SSG (e.g., SGUS, career transition programmes, or certifiable courses).

2. Full-Time vs Part-Time Allowances
The amount you receive depends heavily on whether you commit to studying full-time or part-time.
Full-Time Training (Up to $3,000/month)
For intensive full-time courses, the MCTA acts as an income replacement. The allowance is calculated at 50% of your average monthly income over the past 12 months, capped at a maximum of $3,000 per month. If you are currently unemployed but had income previously, the 12-month average rule still applies.
Part-Time Training ($300/month Flat Rate)
New for 2026! Acknowledging that many mid-career professionals cannot drop their jobs, those enrolling in approved part-time courses will receive a flat rate of $300 per month. This helps offset transport, meals, and other incidental costs associated with night or weekend classes.
3. Maximum Duration and Lifetime Cap
It is important to plan your upskilling journey strategically. Every Singapore Citizen is entitled to a maximum of 24 months of MCTA throughout their lifetime.
You can combine full-time and part-time training. For example, if you take a 6-month full-time course, you will have 18 months of quota left. You can use the remaining 18 months for a part-time diploma later.
Pro Tip: The MCTA covers your living expenses. To pay for the actual course fees, you can concurrently use your $4,000 SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career) top-up, which does not expire!
