Free School Meals 2026: Universal Credit Limits Scrapped & New Breakfast Clubs

1. The End of the Universal Credit Income Cap
The most significant policy shift is the removal of the earnings threshold for families on Universal Credit. According to the latest Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and DfE guidelines:
- From September 2026: ALL Universal Credit claimants in England will qualify for Free School Meals, completely regardless of their income level.
- Why this matters: Previously, accepting a promotion or working extra hours could push families slightly over the £7,400 threshold, causing them to lose hundreds of pounds in school meal funding—a situation known as a "cliff edge." That penalty for working more has been eliminated.

2. The Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM)
Regardless of your benefit status or income, the government continues to fund the Universal Infant Free School Meals program. If your child is in Reception, Year 1, or Year 2 in a state-funded school, they are automatically entitled to a free hot meal every day.
However, if you are on Universal Credit, you should still formally apply for Free School Meals. Why? Because registering triggers the "Pupil Premium," which provides your child's school with up to £1,480 of extra funding to support their education, extracurricular activities, and school trips.
3. The 2026 Free Breakfast Clubs Rollout
The Department for Education (DfE) has confirmed that half a million more children will benefit from the new Free Breakfast Clubs starting in September 2026.
- Who gets it first? Applications have opened for the first wave of 500 primary schools, prioritizing those where 40% or more of the pupils are eligible for Free School Meals.
- Financial Impact: These clubs are entirely free. The government estimates that utilizing a free breakfast club will save working parents up to £450 per year in food and morning childcare costs.
- Time Saved: Beyond the financial savings, parents will get back up to 95 hours of time each year, allowing for earlier work starts or a less stressful morning routine.
